BIKE TOUR BETWEEN THE EUGANEAN HILLS AND THE VENETIAN LAGOON

4-day / 3-night self-guided tour

Looking for a special vacation? We have designed a bike itinerary for you where land and sea meet, between the volcanic hills of the Euganean Hills, the Venetian Lagoon, and the oldest thermal baths in Europe. You will travel along the salt and sugar route, which connects the Euganean Hills to the Venetian Lagoon following an ancient waterway once used by wooden boats, the so-called “burci,” which sailed loaded with goods such as trachyte from the Euganean Hills, salt from Chioggia, and sugar from Pontelongo. You will admire the Venice Lagoon and its Lido, completing the tour towards the Riviera del Brenta where you can visit some of the prestigious Venetian Villas. On the last day, you will discover well-being at the Euganean Thermal Baths.

PROGRAM:

DAY 1 – FROM THE EUGANEAN HILLS TO CHIOGGIA (55 km – no elevation gain) Meeting in the morning and bike handover. Today’s arrival point rightly deserves the nickname “little Venice.” Many small bridges and canals make Chioggia resemble its older sister. As you approach the lagoon, the important rivers and the countless canals that flow slowly towards the sea shape a landscape in balance between land and water and tell of a territory modeled over time by man. The gaze is captured by wheat fields, old peasant “casoni” with reed roofs, splendid Venetian villas, and large Benedictine courts. Upon arrival in Chioggia, you will have time to enjoy the lively atmosphere of this fishing town before the return transfer. Overnight stay in Chioggia.

DAY 2 – THE ISLANDS OF THE LAGOON: PELLESTRINA AND LIDO DI VENEZIA (35 km – no elevation gain) By boat, you will reach Pellestrina, a thin strip of land suspended between the Adriatic Sea and the lagoon. The island is made up of small villages with colorful houses facing the lagoon in a row, flower gardens and vegetable gardens, and a couple of restaurants where you can taste authentic lagoon cuisine. In San Pietro in Volta, you will board for the Lido di Venezia, another of the strips of land that divide the Venetian Lagoon from the Adriatic Sea. Inhabited since ancient times, loved by poets and writers, a meeting place for the jet set since the 1920s, here you can breathe that quiet, elegant atmosphere of beautiful places, but unknown to the masses. Crowds only come here for the Venice Film Festival, but for the rest of the year, peace reigns. The boat trip to the Tronchetto in Venice includes a beautiful passage with a view of St. Mark’s Square. Overnight stay in Mestre.

DAY 3 – THE BRENTA RIVIERA TO PADUA (50 km – no elevation gain) Today you will follow the cycle path called the “Brenta cycle route,” a route on secondary roads that follow the Brenta river canal, dotted with numerous and prestigious historic villas. In Dolo, you will stop in the historic center characterized by the squero (boatyard) and the ancient mill built on an island in the canal. You will have the opportunity to visit Villa Pisani in Stra, also called the “Queen of Venetian villas.” Today it is a National Museum that preserves furniture and works of art from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, including the masterpiece by Gianbattista Tiepolo “Glory of the Pisani family.” You will then continue until you reach Padua with its squares, the Basilica of Saint Anthony, and the Prato della Valle. In a short time, you will then arrive at your destination. Overnight stay at the Euganean Thermal Baths.
